Alicia Parker is a seven-year-old tomboy who is more interested in games for boys than girls. The book explores her experiences after losing her mother and being left unattended for much of the time.
The narrative delves into the emotions of a child who has lost a key figure in their life. It examines how Alicia behaves and reacts to the sudden loss of her mother. The story includes a scene where she climbs a tree falls and nearly breaks her bones.
The book also raises questions about why Alicia is left unattended and alone at home. It explores the reasons for her absence and whether she is truly alone.
